Andrew Hutchison

Andrew Hutchison, sugar agent, was proprietor and occupier of No. 6 Malta Terrace in 1855.¹ He was born at Burntisland, Fife on 24 August 1818, son of Thomas Hutchison, a mariner, and Catherine Belram.²

The Post Office Directory for 1855 and the next four years has no entry for No. 6 Malta Terrace, but lists Andrew Hutchison at his business address, 15 Rose Street.³ In the 1860-61 register of voters his address was 30 Cumberland Street,⁴ but the census on 07 April 1861 recorded him a lodger at 6 St Andrew Square, Edinburgh.⁵ In 1865-66 he was resident in Burntisland, Fife.⁶

The business of Andrew Hutchison came under scrutiny in the Court of Session in 1867 and 1868. Sugar merchants Messrs Bowe & Christie sought payment from John Hutchison who was guarantor (cautioner) for a deal to supply sugar, treacle and syrup to Andrew Hutchison valued at £1178 15s 2d. The main question for the court was whether John Hutchison’s guarantee was still effective, given the nature of later transactions between Andrew Hutchison and Bowe & Christie. The court also considered whether molasses and syrup should be considered as sugar. On 11 July 1867,⁷ the court sided with the defendant but on appeal, on 13 March 1868,⁸ the court ruled that John Hutchison’s guarantee remained valid and that the term sugar in the contracts included molasses and syrup.

Andrew Hutchison married Mary Walls on 15 October 1851.⁹ She was the daughter of farmer John Walls and his wife Margaret Spears, born at Beath, Fife on 28 March 1821.¹⁰ Her mother died when she was 2 years old and her father when she was 17.¹¹ She was an annuitant, living with her sisters at Craiks Ness, Inverkeithing, when she married in 1851.¹² Mary Walls or Hutchison died after a long illness at Hermiston, Currie on 02 July 1858, and was buried at Burntisland.¹³ Andrew Hutchison’s date of death, sometime after 1868, has not been found.
