Isabella Struthers

Miss Isabella Struthers was listed as tenant and occupant of No. 5 Malta Terrace in the electoral registers of 1888-89 and 1889-90. She then appears to have moved to 14 Ann Street where she was listed as proprietrix in the electoral register¹ and recorded in the 1891 census.²

Isabella Miller Struthers was born on 18 January 1827 at Strathaven, Lanarkshire daughter of land owner Gavin Struthers and his wife Marion Dykes. For most of her life, Isabella Struthers lived at the farm of Overfield in Lanarkshire. She was recorded living there with her parents in the 1851,³ 1861⁴ and 1871⁵ censuses. In 1881, five years after her widowed mother’s death, she was still at Overfield, described as landed proprietrix.⁶ Overfield was sold in 1886⁷ and Isabella moved to Edinburgh. She died unmarried at 21 Northumberland Street, Edinburgh on 27 October 1901.⁸
