The Kelly family

Peter Kelly, a house painter, lived at 7 St Bernard’s Row between 1907 and 1916.1 He was born in Edinburgh about 1848,2 the son of Henrietta Kelly who was the daughter of a building contractor.3 He appears to have been raised by his grandmother, Mary Kelly, and was recorded in her household at 17 Allan Street in the 1851 and 1861 censuses.4, 5 Mary Kelly (born Crosbie) was the widow of Peter Kelly, a mason.6 Their son, John Kelly was also a house painter.7

Atged 13 years, Peter Kelly was an apprentice house painter.8 For many years he lived in Dean Street, before moving to 7 St Bernard’s Row about 1910.9 He died there on 28 July 1916.10

Peter Kelly married Jane Heddle on 4 April 1873.11 She was born in Orkney and baptised on 13 October 1849 at Walls and Flotta, daughter of Edward Heddle, carpenter and Fanny Sutherland.12 Jane Heddle or Kelly continued to live at 7 St Bernard’s Row until her death there on 10 June 1941.13

Three of Peter Kelly and Jane Heddle’s five children died in infancy, long before the family’s residence at 7 St Bernard’s Row. Their adult and married daughters Agnes Mary Kelly or Stuart and Maud Bews Kelly or Thomson were recorded at 7 St Bernard’s Row in the 1911 Census.14

Agnes Mary Kelly was baptised at St Bernard’s Church, Edinburgh on 01 April 1877.15 In 1903 she married Charles Stuart, a furniture salesman.16 Their daughter Marjorie Jane Stuart, born in 1906,17 was at 7 St Bernard’s Row when the 1911 census was taken.18 Agnes Mary Kelly or Stuart died in Edinburgh in 1959.19

Maud Bews Heddle Kelly was baptised on 25 May 1883.20 She married William Thomson by proclamation on 26 December 1908.21 He was a corporal in the RAMC at the time and she gave her address as 1 Malta Terrace. She was listed as Maud Thomson in the electoral register at 7 St Bernard’s Row between 1949 and 1956.22 She died there on 12 January 1956.23
