Thomas Tibbetts

Thomas Tibbetts was living at No. 5 Malta Terrace in 1854 when his son Thomas was born there on 28 July 1854.1 In 1851 he was at 5 St Patrick Square2 and may have moved to Malta Terrace the following year. His residence was not listed in the PO Directories but a business address at 38 South Bridge was.3

Thomas Tibbetts was born in Edinburgh on 24 April 1802, son of William Tibbetts, a hatter, and Elizabeth Gray.4 He was a wine and spirit merchant in London, with premises at 48 Mark Lane. His partnership with John Maxwell Hilles was dissolved 01 August 1844,5 and in 1850, when he was resident in Edinburgh, he was described as “late merchant at No. 48 Mark Lane, London.”6 In the 1851 census his occupation was recorded as ‘retired brandy merchant’.7 He returned to London after 1854 and died at 40 Gerrard Street, London on 24 April 1869.8

Thomas Tibbetts married Margaret Almond at Shoreditch, London in 1845.9 She was born about 1820 and died in London in 1863.10 They had three children when they were resident in Malta Terrace:

    • Margaret Tibbetts was born in Shoreditch, London in 1847.11 She married Robert Alexander Melvill, a watchmaker and jeweller, on 14 July 1866, at St Mathew’s, Islington.12 She died in 1912.13
    • Elizabeth Gray Tibbetts was born in Edinburgh on 11 June 1850.14 In 1870, she married Philip Melvill, a watchmaker and jeweller and brother of Robert Alexander Melvill.15 She died in Crouch Hill, London on 13 January 1924.16
    • Thomas Tibbetts was born at No. 5 Malta Terrace on 28 July 1854.17 He was described as a clerk in the 1871,18 publican of the Artillery Arms, Rochester Row, in 188119 and a commercial clerk in 1891.20 He married Emily Grace Chapman in 188221 and died in 1920.22
