Alexander W. D. MacGregor, a typewriter dealer and repairer, occupied No. 2 from 1915[1] until his death in 1945. His widow Elizabeth T. MacGregor remained at No. 2 until 1959.[2]
Alexander William Duncan Macgregor was born in Gorbals, Glasgow in 1884,[3] son of John Bryce McGregor and Elizabeth McDonald. In Alexander’s death registration, John McGregor’s occupation was stated to be ‘pickle manufacturer’ but in Alexander’s marriage registration it was recorded as ‘commercial traveller.’ The 1891 census records John McGregor’s occupation as ‘draper’s traveller’ and in the 1901 census it was pattern maker.
Alex W. D. McGregor was a ‘mechanical typewriter machine apprentice’ in 1901, living in his father’s household in Glasgow.[4] In 1911 he was a typewriter mechanic, boarding in 18 Duke Street, Edinburgh.[5] In 1913 his occupation was typewriter inspector and in 1921 he was a self-employed dealer and repairer of typewriters living at No. 2 Malta Terrace.[6] He died on 22 December 1945.[7]
Alexander W. D. McGregor married Margaret Elizabeth Edgar on 21 August 1913, in Glasgow.[8] She was born 07 July 1886 at Liverpool, daughter of James Edgar, master mariner, and Annie Doyle.[9] She was a costume fitter living at 81 Scott Street, Glasgow when she married.[10] She died of liver cancer at the Royal Infirmary Edinburgh on 17 August 1924.[11]
Alex. W.D. McGregor and Margaret Edgar had two sons born during their residence at No. 2 Malta Terrace. Their first son was Alexander Edgar McGregor, born at No. 2 on 02 August 1917.[12] He died in Edinburgh in 1971.[13] Their second son, Ian Hamilton McGregor, born on 28 December 1919,[14] served as a Royal Navy telegraphist at ‘HMS Hannibal,’ a shore station in north Africa, and was killed in action on 21 March 1944.[15]
Alex. W.D. McGregor married his second wife, Elizabeth Thomson Linstrum, in 1928.[16] She was born at Ayr in 1882, the daughter of Charles Linstrum, a native of Norway, and Catherine Wilson.[17] In 1901 she was a tailor’s machinist, living in the Calton district of Glasgow with her parents.[18] In 1921 she was a dressmaker in Paisley employed by Copeland and Lye, drapers.[19] She continued to live at No. 2 after the death of Alex. W.D. McGregor and was listed there in Electoral Registers until 1955.[20] She died at Saltcoats, Ayrshire in 1964.[21]
