Alfred Wright

Alfred Wright, a physician, lived at Malta House from about 1858 to 1861. He was absent, visiting a cousin in Derbyshire, for the 18611 census but his wife and family were recorded at Malta House. He was born at Horton, Kings, Nova Scotia on 23 September 1825, son of Rev. Joseph Wright, rector at Horton, and Anne Crosby Wiggins.2

In 1851, Alfred Wright was at 52 Castle Street, described as a physician (MD Edin.) in general practice.3 In the next three censuses he was described as an MD ‘not practising’4,5, 6 and in 18917 and 19018 as ‘living on private means.’ He died in Edinburgh on 31 March 1907.9

Alfred Wright married in Edinburgh on 07 September 1848, Catherine Moir daughter of James Moir, a surgeon, and Margaret Laing Stonehouse.10 She was born in Edinburgh on 28 June 181511 and died on 29 July 1886 at 4 Glengyle Terrace.12

The three daughters of Alfred Wright and Catherine Moir were living at Malta House in 1861:

  • Margaret Ann Wright was born in Edinburgh on 10 December 1851.13 In 1891 she was recorded living in her maternal uncle’s household at 52 Castle Street, Edinburgh.14 She died unmarried at 4 Glengyle Terrace on 18 October 1903.15
  • Elizabeth Catherine Wright was born in Edinburgh on 26 October 185316 and died unmarried on 14 December 1939 at 5 Cluny Avenue.17
  • Harriet Wright was born on in Liberton, Edinburgh on 10 March 1857.18 She was living in Chelsea, London in 1881, described as an ‘artist painter.’19 When she was admitted to Crichton Royal Asylum, Dumfries on 01 June 1889 she was described as an architect’s apprentice.20 She remained in asylums for the rest of her life, including two years at Mavisbank Asylum, Lasswade,21 a brief stay at James Murray’s Royal Asylum,22 Perth and from 31 May 1892 at Aberdeen Royal Asylum.23 She died there of tuberculosis on 19 February 1904.24
