David Rose

David Rose, a builder, took up residence at No. 8 in 1932 and lived there until his death on 25 February 1960. He was born in 1880, son of John Rose, a joiner, and Margaret Clinkscales Bell (1850-1928). His maternal grandfather was Dvaid Bell, at one time chairman of the Edinburgh Co-operative Building Company, which built the Stockbridge Colonies.

David Rose married Elizabeth Aiken Duguid on 2 January 1913, at St James’s Episcopal Church, Inverleith. Elizabeth Aiken Duguid was born in 1885, daughter of John Duguid, a gardener, and Mary Ann Norwell. At the time of her marriage in 1913 she was described as an outfitter’s saleswoman living at 18 Clarence Street. She was recorded in the 1901 census as a lodger at this address. Elizabeth remained at No. 8 for at least five years after her husband’s death in 1960. She died in 1971.

David Rose and Elizabeth Aiken Duguid had two daughters, who would have been in their teens when the family move to No. 8. The elder, Dorothy Mary Rose, was born in 1914. She married Dr William Thomson Scott in 1943.

The younger daughter was Elizabeth Margaret Rose, born 4 April 1916. She was educated at George Watson’s Ladies College and studied medicine at Edinburgh University, graduating in 1938. She worked for a decade in hospitals in England, specialising in obstetrics and gynaecology, becoming a member of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists in 1947. Following her return to Scotland, she was appointed a consultant at Stirling Royal Infirmary in the early 1950s. She was became a highly respected consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist and became a Fellow of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists in 1966 through recognition by her peers. Elizabeth Margaret Rose died at Bridge of Allan, aged 94, on 1 April 2011.
