The Douglas family

In 1913, Mrs Christian Douglas and her adult children moved from No. 6 Malta Terrace to No. 5, next door.¹ She was the widow of John Campbell Douglas, an accountant and company secretary, who died on 10 February 1885 at Southwick Engine Works, Durham.² She was born in Edinburgh on 18 December 1841, the daughter of William Edward, a butler, and his wife Mary Lee.³ She died at No. 5, a few months after the move, on 23 January 1914.⁴

Christian Douglas’s children continued to occupy No. 5 until the early 1950s. They are listed there in the electoral register of 1951 but are absent in the register of 1955.⁵ After this date, the family home became 3 Ethel Terrace, Morningside, Edinburgh. The siblings were:

• • Mary Lee Douglas was born on 21 June 1870 and baptised at Southwick, Durham on 20 May 1885.⁶ She was described as a teacher of music and sewing in the 1911 census⁷ and died at Morningside, Edinburgh in 1960.⁸
  • Isabella Campbell Douglas was born 29 May 1872 and baptised at Southwick, Durham on 20 May 1885.⁶ She was also a teacher of music⁷ and died in 1968.⁹
  • John Campbell Douglas was born on21 October 1873 and baptised at Southwick, Durham on 20 May 1885.¹⁰ He was an insurance clerk employed by the Scottish Union & National Insurance Company.¹¹ He died on 12 March 1964.¹²
  • William Clerk Douglas was born 24 August 1878 and baptised at Southwick, Durham on 20 May 1885.¹⁰ He was a science teacher⁷ and died in 1955.¹³
  • Janet Douglas was born at Southwick, Durham in 1880.¹⁴ She was described as a pupil teacher in the 1901 census,¹⁵ and a teacher in the 1921 census.¹¹ She died at West Linton, Peeblesshire in 1978.¹⁶
  • Henry Douglas was born in Southwick, Durham 22 August 1883¹⁷ and died on 06 January 1954, in Leith.^18,19 He was described as a law clerk in the 1901 census,¹⁵ as an arts student in the 1911 census,⁷ and as a teacher employed by the Edinburgh Education Authority in the 1921 census.¹¹
