Mrs M’Farquhar was listed at No. 3 from 1835 to 1838, when she moved to 18 Fettes Row. Bethia Brown was born at Dunsyre, Lanarkshire on 17 May 1765, and was the daughter of Lawrence Brown and Anna Lawson. She married John McFarquhar, W.S., at Edinburgh on 11 October 1793. He died on 10 June 1817.
Four of their daughters were listed living with their widowed mother at Fettes Row in 1841 and probably also lived at No. 3 Malta Terrace with her. These were Ann MacFarquhar (born 20 March 1795, at Edinburgh), Elizabeth MacFarquhar (born 30 June 1801), Janet MacFarquhar (born 1802) and Frances MacFarquhar (born 11 November 1804).
