Mary Penn was listed in the electoral register at No. 3 Malta Terrace between 1932 and 1937.[1] She was at 25 Torphichen Street in 1939[2] and after the second world war at 27 Watson Crescent,[3] which was her home address when she died on 19 February 1950, aged 80 years.[4]
Mary Ann Penn was born on 18 December 1868 at Kinneff and Catterine, Kincardineshire,[5] where her father William Penn was a coast guard. Her mother was Mary Ann Pride. The family were at St Vigeans coastguard station, near Arbroath, in 1881.[6] Mary was recorded in the 1891 census as a general servant in the household of George Watson, a chartered accountant, at 6 Westhall Gardens.[7] She later worked as a self-employed dressmaker, which was her occupation in 1901, when she was living with her now elderly parents at 68 Queen Street.[8] In 1921 she and her sister Lydia, both unmarried, were dressmakers living at 108 George Street, along with four lodgers.[9]
