Frederick Smith

Frederick Smith was listed in post office directories as resident at No. 3 from 1881 to 1890. Though his occupation was given as artist (oil colour) in the 1881 census, he was a school teacher before this and in 1882 he entered the Edinburgh Theological College. Fred Smith was born about 1847 at Cambridge. In 1871 he was a school teacher in Cambridge, before moving to be science master at Dollar. He was ordained into the Episcopal Church in 1888, when he became a chaplain at St Ninian’s Cathedral, Perth. A contemporary account described as “a little man with a long black beard, and dark eyes sparkling with merriment.”

Fred Smith was rector at St Luke’s, Glasgow 1890-95; chaplin at Cromlix, 1895-1901, and then priest in charge at South Queensferry, 1901-18. Between 1915 and 1918 he was an officer clergyman to the troops. He was the author of The Animal Book (1897), Geographical Terms (1898), Introduction to Commercial Geography (1899), Boyhood of a Naturalist (1900), and The Stone Ages in Northern Britain and Ireland (1909).

Fred Smith married Emily Mary … (b. at Cambridge) … children born at Dollar … resident in 1881.
