W Thomson M.A., B.Sc., F.R.S.E. was listed at No. 4 in 1883/84. Sir William Thomson was a mathematician, born 31 December 1856 at Kirkton of Mailler, Perthshire, and died 6 August 1947. He was an Assistant in Mathematics at Edinburgh University, 1878-83; and appointed Professor of Mathematics at Stellenbosch University in 1883. Principal 1924-8 Witwatersrand University.
