James Murray

James Murray, who lived at No. 6 from 1860 until his death in 1892, was postmaster at Leith. He was born 23 October 1820 in Edinburgh, a son of Alexander Murray and Janet Moffat.

In 1861 he was described as a clerk in the General Post Office; in 1881 as Acting Post Master at Leith. By 1891 he had retired and was described as an annuitant.

James Murray married Agnes Ritchie at 86 George Street, Edinburgh on 13 January 1846. They lived at 30 Hamilton Place, Edinburgh until about 1860, when the family moved to 6 Malta Terrace. Of their eleven children, only the youngest was born there. James Murray died on 27 October 1892 in Edinburgh. His widow continued at No. 6 until shortly before her death in 1897.
