Robert Stenhouse

Robert Stenhouse and his family lived at No. 1 from 1876 to 1882. Robert Stenhouse was born about 1838 at Kincardine, Perthshire, son of Robert Stenhouse and Helen Drysdale. He was a chemist (1881) and druggist (1861) by profession, though in 1881 he was described as not in business. When he moved to Malta Terrace, he was assistant secretary to the Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain.

He married Margaret McNicol on 4 March 1864, at Ardrossan, Ayrshire. She and seven of their children were recorded at No. 1 in 1881: Mary Drysdale Stenhouse (born at Alva on 19 December 1864), Robert Stenhouse (born at Alva on 22 February 1867), William Stenhouse (born at Alva on 20 February 1869), John Stenhouse (born 1874), Ellen Stenhouse (born 1876), Isabella Stenhouse (born 1878), and Margaret Stenhouse (born at No. 1 Malta Terrace on 11 Janaury 1881). Another son died, Archibald Fullerton McNicol Stenhouse died at No. 1 Malta Terrace on 1 August 1876.

  1. Robert Stenhouse is the brother of Jessie Stenhouse who married John McLaren in Alva in 1863. John & Jessie then emigrated to New Zealand. One son Peter Stenhouse McLaren who is grandfather to my husband.
