Listed at No. 8 Malta Terrace only in 1872/73, this was probably Edward Owen Crichton, who served as an engineer in the Royal Navy. In 1871 he was living in Gateshead, with his widowed mother and wife, Mary. He was born in South Leith on 24 April 1824, son of George Crichton and Gifford Allan. He died 7 June 1894, when he was resident at 6 Greenhill Place.

Edward Owen Crichton is my Grandmother’s father. His only son, George Edward Allan Crichton was also in the Navy and went down with the “Black Prince” in 1916.
Edward’s mother, Gifford, was the daughter of William & Margaret Allan and the grandaughter of Gifford (Somervail) & James Allan.
