J. and D. Mitchelson were listed at Malta House in 1830-31.<\/span>1<\/sup><\/a><\/span> This was the business name of a firm of painters and glaziers operated by John Mitchelson. John Mitchelson had business premises in Rose Street from 1821<\/span>2<\/sup><\/a><\/span> but did not adopt the name J. and D. Mitchelson until 1829.<\/span>3<\/sup><\/a><\/span> The \u2018D\u2019 probably came from his father David Mitchelson, also a painter and glazier, though he died on 07 November 1828.<\/span>4<\/sup><\/a><\/span> John Mitchelson\u2019s brother James was also a painter and glazier before he joined the army in 1823.<\/span>5<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

John Mitchelson was born at Cupar, Fife on 16 December 1795, son of David Mitchelson and Agnes Ness.<\/span>6<\/sup><\/a><\/span> He was in business in Edinburgh by 1820, living first at 10 Jamaica Street.<\/span>7<\/sup><\/a><\/span> In 1824 he was at 56 India Street<\/span>8<\/sup><\/a><\/span> and the following year at 6 Brunswick Place, where he remained until 1830<\/span>9<\/sup><\/a><\/span> and his short occupancy of Malta House. He was recorded at 17 Fettes Row in the 1841 census<\/span>10<\/sup><\/a><\/span> and listed there until 1847<\/span>11<\/sup><\/a><\/span> before moving to Bristol, Gloucestershire. There he adopted the name \u2018Roberts\u2019 and was recorded as John \u2018Roberts\u2019 in the 1851<\/span>12<\/sup><\/a><\/span> and 1871<\/span>13<\/sup><\/a><\/span> censuses. He died in Bristol on 09 September 1871.<\/span>14<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

John Mitchelson married Catherine Heriot Hatton in Edinburgh on 07 January 1822.<\/span>15<\/sup><\/a><\/span> She was born in Edinburgh on 25 July 1802, daughter of David Hatton, a carver and guilder, and Anne Haldane.<\/span>16<\/sup><\/a><\/span> When she died in Bristol, Gloucestershire on 22 September 1849 her surname was recorded as \u2018Roberts.\u2019<\/span>17<\/sup><\/a><\/span>,<\/sup> <\/span>18<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

John Mitchelson and Catherine Hatton had four children before they occupied Malta House. All four were recorded in the 1841 census at Fettes Row<\/span>19<\/sup><\/a><\/span> and it is likely they also lived briefly at Malta House.<\/p>\n

The eldest was John Roberts Mitchelson, born in Edinburgh on 10 February 1823<\/span>20<\/sup><\/a><\/span> and described as a painter in the 1841 census. He moved to Bristol with his parents and was living with them in 1851 at 8 May Terrace, Bristol, occupation landscape painter.<\/span>21<\/sup><\/a><\/span> In November 1858, \u2018out of business and employment,\u2019 he petitioned for insolvency. He had operated at 2 Bond Street, Bristol as an artist, picture dealer, buyer and seller of paintings on commission, carver and guilder and occasionally letting unfurnished apartments.<\/span>22<\/sup><\/a><\/span> He appeared before the Bristol insolvency court on 02 and 03 December 1858 but was not declared bankrupt.<\/span>23<\/sup><\/a><\/span> In 1861 he was an artist and picture dealer at 18 Lower Arcade, Bristol.<\/span>24<\/sup><\/a><\/span> He married 04 April 1865 at Westbury on Trym, Gloucestershire Emily Ann Fuller, daughter of Samuel Fuller, farmer.<\/span>25<\/sup><\/a><\/span> John Roberts Mitchelson sometimes used the surname Roberts and his death at 6 Union Street, Bristol on 28 June 1871 was registered under that name.<\/span>26<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

David Roberts Mitchelson, born in Edinburgh on 04 December 1824,<\/span>27<\/sup><\/a><\/span> was an apprentice painter in 1841. He married Caroline Pritchard at Bristol on 31 March 1850, when his father was named as John Mitchelson, picture dealer.<\/span>28<\/sup><\/a><\/span> David Roberts or Mitchelson was a (house) painter in Bristol in 1851.<\/span>29<\/sup><\/a><\/span> He moved to London and in 1871 was a house painter living at 31 Luton Street, Marylebone, London.<\/span>30<\/sup><\/a><\/span> He died a widower\u00a0 on 20 March 1882 at 59 Salisbury Street, Marylebone, London.<\/span>31<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

Edward Lothian Mitchelson was born in Edinburgh on 24 December 1826.<\/span>32<\/sup><\/a><\/span> He remained in Edinburgh when his parents moved to Bristol. In 1850 he served time in Calton Jail, Edinburgh<\/span>33<\/sup><\/a><\/span> and in 1861 he was a (house) painter at East Broadlaw, Linlithgow.<\/span>34<\/sup><\/a><\/span> Edward Lothian Mitchelson died of self-inflicted abdominal wounds on 05 June 1871 at Walton, Carriden, Linlithgow.<\/span>35<\/sup><\/a><\/span> A newspaper account described him as a tramp known locally as \u2018Singing Jamie\u2019 who wounded himself with a table knife in \u2018a temporary fit of insanity\u2019 and tried to stab those trying to take the knife from him.<\/span>36<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

Ann Hadden Mitchelson was born in Edinburgh on 09 May 1829.<\/span>37<\/sup><\/a><\/span> She was recorded as Ann Roberts in the 1851 census, in Bristol,<\/span>38<\/sup><\/a><\/span> and married William Combley Banks, a bricklayer, in early 1859.<\/span>39<\/sup><\/a><\/span> They were living at 33 East Street, Marylebone, London in 1861<\/span>40<\/sup><\/a><\/span> and emigrated to Australia the following year.<\/span>41<\/sup><\/a><\/span> Ann Banks died in Queensland, Australia on 02 April 1908.<\/span>42<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

John Mitchelson\u2019s youngest brother David Mitchelson was convicted of theft in 1839, having broken into a shop in Rose Street (possibly his brother\u2019s) stealing two paintings.<\/span>43<\/sup><\/a><\/span> A previous conviction for theft in 1833, for which he was sentenced to nine months\u2019 in Edinburgh\u2019s Bridewell,<\/span>44<\/sup><\/a><\/span> resulted in a sentence of seven years\u2019 transportation.<\/span>45<\/sup><\/a><\/span> He was recorded in the 1841 census on the Convict Hulk \u2018Warrior\u2019 at Woolwich Dockyard<\/span>46<\/sup><\/a><\/span> and was pardoned on 23 March 1843.<\/span>47<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
