James Cardno attested to East India Company at Meerut on 24 May 1852, aged 14 according to service record. He was appointed Drummer 27 May 1856. He volunteered to the 101st Royal Bengal Fusiliers in 1861. He was tried by court martial and imprisoned for a month in 1862. Discharged 15 November 1864 and remained on payroll a further year.
