Family's link with St Fergus
The last link with a former lengthy association with the Burn Mill, St Fergus, has been removed with the death of Mr Alexander Cardno, Katteburn, Inverugie, in his ninety-fifth year.
The milling business was in the hands of Mr Cardno's grandfather, and later of his father, and when the latter died, as a young man, Mr Cardno carried on until his retirement at the age of sixty-nine.
Apart from his wide connection with farmers while at the mill, Mr Cardno took a particularly keen interest in horticulture, and was an enthusiastic supporter of the St Fergus flower show in former years. Even after going into retirement at Kan he hae retained his interest in flowers, and he spent much of his time in the care of a large garden.
Mr Cardno is survived by a family of three sons and three daughters.
It is rather remarkable that his father, mother and three sisters have all been

An Inverugie Nonagenarian.
Mr A. Cardno's Remarkable Record.
In Peterhead and immediate neighbourhood there is a sturdy little band of nonagenarians, all the members of which are distinguished by their amazing mental and physical vitality. Their ranks were thinned last week, by the death of the oldest member, Mr Alexander Cardno, Katteburn, Inverugie, who was bordering closely on the patriarchal age of ninety-five. During the long period of his retirement - twenty-six years - Mr Cardno maintained a great variety of active interests, and until a short time before his death he was able to walk into Peterhead every Sunday to attend church.
Mr Cardno was a miller to trade, and he had a hereditary association with the Burn Mill, St. Fergus, which was carried on successively and successfully by his grandfather, his father and himself. All his life Mr Cardno was an enthusiastic horticulturalist. During his working life and later, throughout his retirement, he was a prominent supporter of and exhibitor at the St. Fergus flower show. His garden, which he tended with skill and loving care, was the admiration of his many friends. He was also an adept at carpentry, and many ingenious and useful products emanated from his well-equipped workshop.
Mr Cardno was a devoted member of St. Peter's Episcopal Church, and his regular attendance down to the time of his last illness was an impressive feature of the life of the congregation. He is survived by a family of three sons and three daughters.
The funeral took place yesterday, and a memorial service was held in St. Peter's Church. |
