Jimmy Cardno
Jimmy CARDNO was a Welsh footballer who played professionally as striker for teams in Wales, Canada, Australia and the Netherlands.
James Robert CARDNO was born in Fraserburgh on 23 May 1946, the first child of James CARDNO and Margaret CRYLE. The family moved to Rhyl in north Wales in 1952. James senior (Jim) was a keen semi-professional footballer, having played a season for Rhyl as left back in 1949-50. He also played for Macclesfield and Southport.
Jimmy CARDNO, the eldest of seven children, was educated at Rhyl Grammar School before studying languages for a year at Aberystwyth University. As a schoolboy he played for Everton, Liverpool and the Wales Schoolboys team. When a teenager played regularly for Rhyl’s first team and in 1964 for Wales Universities.
In 1967, Jimmy moved to Toronto, Canada where is uncle George had settled. He played for Toronto Royals for three years before joining Toronto Croatia and then Santa Monica. He returned to Wales in 1972, signing for Rhyl. In the 1971-72 season he scored 50 goals for Rhyl, enabling the club to win the Cheshire League championship. In 1972, he also played game for Scotland’s amateur team.
After his successful year with Rhyl, Jimmy travelled to Australia, where he played for Polonia Sydney, and Singapore. He then signed for the Dutch team HFC Haarlem, returning to Rhyl in 1974. He played for several teams in north Wales before retiring from semi-professional football.
Jimmy then worked first as a financial adviser and later for Royal Mail in Chester. After retiring, he was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2015 and was cared for at home until 2019. Jimmy Cardno died on 26 January 2021 at the age of 74 from complications of COVID-19 while in a nursing home during lockdown.
Jimmy Cardno married Angela (Angie) McMahon at Rhyl in 1980. They had three sons.
